Treatment with neuromodulators such as BOTOX are the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic treatments. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that more than seven million procedures were performed in a recent year alone. Dr. Kim performs BOTOX injections in Portland, Oregon to create a more youthful and pleasing facial appearance.
What is BOTOX and How Does it Work?
BOTOX is a brand name for a product based on botulinum toxin type A, a product made from the bacterial toxin botulin. It is widely used to treat certain medical conditions, but cosmetically, neuromodulators are used to temporarily remove wrinkles by blocking signals from the nerves to specific facial muscles.
What Can You Expect with BOTOX Injections?
Our Portland BOTOX injections are administered on an outpatient basis. The procedure requires no anesthesia and only takes a few minutes to perform. Using very fine needles, BOTOX is injected into specific muscles with minimal discomfort.
There is no downtime after BOTOX injections in Portland, and in fact, many of our patients are professionals who return to work right after having received their treatment. You may resume most normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, you should not rub or massage the treated areas, as this can cause migration of the botulinum toxin to different areas. You should also refrain from heavy exercise activity for at least four hours after treatment.
Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?
Most patients of adult age who show signs of aging are candidates for BOTOX treatments.
However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people with certain neuromuscular medical conditions should not have this treatment.
If you have had facial surgery, have difficulty swallowing, or have weakness in your forehead muscles, you may not be a candidate for this procedure. After a consultation and evaluation of your facial structure, Dr. Kim can tell you if BOTOX injections are recommended.
How Many Units Will I Need?
After the initial consultation, Dr. Kim will formulate a plan that will take into account each patient’s anatomy and treatment goals. This plan is customized for each individual patient and therefore the amount of units administered can vary greatly. On average, most patients receive 30-50 units of Botox.
How Safe Is BOTOX?
As stated by the manufacturer, BOTOX is backed by more than 15 years of clinical studies and approved for use in 96 countries. The safety and efficacy of these products have been described in nearly 500 articles in medical and scientific journals. BOTOX in Portland, Oregon are some of the safest and most effective aesthetic procedures offered, and therefore continue to enjoy great popularity and patient satisfaction.
How Long Do the Results Last?
The full effects of BOTOX injections can last for three to four months, and therefore most patients return to our clinic three to four times a year. As the muscles gradually regain the ability to contract, lines and wrinkles begin to reappear. Over time, wrinkles may be diminished, as the muscles are being trained to relax and atrophy of the target muscle takes place.
Many patients say that neuromodulator injections feel like a series of small pinches. If you are concerned about discomfort, ice or topical numbing cream can be applied before the procedure.
How Soon Will I See Results?
It takes about seven days after the treatment to see the full effects of BOTOX injections.
Can BOTOX Be Used to Treat More than Forehead Lines, Scowl Lines, and Crow’s Feet?
BOTOX has a number of off-label cosmetic uses. For example, it can be used to:
Lift the mouth corners
Soften vertical lines around the mouth
Smooth out the chin
Relax vertical cords in the neck
Reshape and reduce the width of the jaw
What Are the Side Effects of BOTOX Injections?
The most common side effect with BOTOX is temporary bruising. Although it is rare, neuromodulator injections may cause drooping of an eyelid or headaches.
What Should I Do to Prepare for BOTOX Injections?
Stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before your Portland BOTOX injections to help reduce bruising from the procedure. Also refrain from taking blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil, gingko, ginger, garlic, and ginseng.
