What is BOTOX and How Does it Work?
BOTOX is a brand name for a product based on botulinum toxin type A, a product made from the bacterial toxin botulin. It is widely used to treat certain medical conditions, but cosmetically, neuromodulators are used to temporarily remove wrinkles by blocking signals from the nerves to specific facial muscles.
What Can You Expect with BOTOX Injections?
Our Portland BOTOX injections are administered on an outpatient basis. The procedure requires no anesthesia and only takes a few minutes to perform. Using very fine needles, BOTOX is injected into specific muscles with minimal discomfort.
Does BOTOX Require Recovery Time?
There is no downtime after BOTOX injections in Portland, and in fact, many of our patients are professionals who return to work right after having received their treatment. You may resume most normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, you should not rub or massage the treated areas, as this can cause migration of the botulinum toxin to different areas. You should also refrain from heavy exercise activity for at least four hours after treatment.
Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?
Most patients of adult age who show signs of aging are candidates for BOTOX treatments.
However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people with certain neuromuscular medical conditions should not have this treatment.
If you have had facial surgery, have difficulty swallowing, or have weakness in your forehead muscles, you may not be a candidate for this procedure. After a consultation and evaluation of your facial structure, Dr. Kim can tell you if BOTOX injections are recommended.

This plan is customized for each individual patient and therefore the amount of units administered can vary greatly. On average, most patients receive 30-50 units of Botox.
How Safe Is BOTOX?
As stated by the manufacturer, BOTOX is backed by more than 15 years of clinical studies and approved for use in 96 countries. The safety and efficacy of these products have been described in nearly 500 articles in medical and scientific journals. As the muscles gradually regain the ability to contract, lines and wrinkles begin to reappear. Over time, wrinkles may be diminished, as the muscles are being trained to relax and atrophy of the target muscle takes place.
